First-time visitors should note that while 1 plus the (800) toll-free area code always must be dialed, sometimes 1 may be required before the local area code (212) when calling a New York number from within the Greater New York area. In any event, the Greater New York area has 10-digit dialing which requires that an area code precede all phone numbers dialed. Fortunately, recorded messages from the local phone company will intercept incorrectly dialed calls, and provide the correct dialing instructions for the number attempted.
